Java Issue

On 10/16/2012 Apple Updated Java and it causes a conflict where the teacher Gradebook will not launch. This ONLY affects Macs.

On Friday, 10/19/2012, Pearson posted a fix on PowerSource Article 67315. This fix involves editing one line of a file on your server. For Hosted customers, the fix has been automatically applied.



NOTE: What follows is archived for historical purposes, it is recommended to apply the fix above!


The workaround, until Pearson releases a fix, is to either:

A - "Downgrade" Java to an older version

B - Apply the fix in the PowerSource Forum discussion (see link below). The fix involves modifying one line in the launchgradebook.jnlp file on the teacher's computer. Some have reported being able to apply the fix to the jnlp file on the server, which fixes it for all.

Alternative method to Uninstall Oracle Java 7 using the Terminal on a user computer
This is an alternative method for uninstalling Java 7 for advanced users familiar with entering commands on Terminal window.
Following the steps listed will uninstall Oracle Java 7 from your system.

Note: To uninstall Java 7, you must have Administrator privileges and execute the remove command either as root or by using the sudo.

Click on the Finder icon located in your dock
Click on Applications tab on sidebar
Click on the Utilities folder
Double-click on the Terminal icon
In the Terminal window Copy and Paste the command below:
sudo rm -fr /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin

Find this line
Download Java Runtime Environment 7 Update 7:
Mac OS X 50.03 MB jre-7u7-macosx-x64.dmg


Run the dmg file from your desktop. Allow as trusted site, DO NOT run newest update. Back in business!
